Tanner is a fictional character and protagonist in the Driver video game series. He appears in (as the protagonist and playable character) Driver, Driver 2, and Driv3r.

Role in the Driver series

Driver: You Are The Wheelman

Tanner first appeared in Driver: You Are the Wheelman, which takes place in the 1970s. Back then, he was working as a NYPD detective. Tanner was put undercover due to his remarkable driving skills (he was an ex-racing driver) and was ordered to bring down a syndicate headed by a kingpin named Castaldi. By the end of the mission, he is put to the task to kill the President; but Tanner refuses and foils the entire operation, eventually bringing down Castaldi. The storyline was based in Miami, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City.

Driver 2: The Wheelman is Back

In Driver 2, Tanner and his new partner, Detective Tobias Jones, are put with the Chicago Police Department to find a man named Pink Lenny (who was nearly killed by two hitmen at a bar). Solomon Caine (a gangster with an empire stretching from Chicago to Las Vegas) is revealed to be the one who wants Lenny captured. Lenny is said to have been an accountant for Solomon Caine, but screwed him over and started working for his rival gangster Alvaro Vasquez, who is never identified. Throughout the game, Tanner escapes the villains and gets information but never apprehends Jericho, Caine, nor Vasquez. He does catch Lenny, however, and turns him over to the authorities.

Driv3r

In Driv3r Tanner is put back into the undercover world working for the FBI in Miami (along with his partner from Driver 2, Tobias Jones). He is assigned to go undercover as a driver for an auto theft ring known as South Beach that stretches through Miami, Nice and Istanbul. Tanner's main focus in this game is apprehending his nemesis Jericho, who killed Solomon Caine and took over his operation, and apprehending the whole of South Beach. In the final showdown between Tanner and Jericho, both men are presumably mortally wounded. It then skips to the emergency room where Tanner is trying to be resuscitated by doctors in a trauma room, but it remains unknown whether Tanner, Jericho, or both flat line at the end.

After Driv3r

There are several references to Tanner in Driver: Parallel Lines. In the mission Bear Cage, there was a picture of Tanner in an office inside the NYPD police station. Also, the Corrigan character seems to be based on him. Additionally graffiti on TK's safehouse wall says: "Tanner Lives", and "I love Tanner".
